A Mischievous Lot!
Having read Enid Blyton as a child, I've been fascinated by her thoughts and words even as the years passed by. She's one of my favourite authors. The characters she etches... the settings, the plot, her style is really amazing. The language is simple yet captivating. It truly helps build an interest in reading and adds to the vocabulary. The pictures of gardens, children, food and simple country life that she paints with her pen leaves one longing for more.
This poem too in a way celebrates the innocent mischief of childhood days. You've got to read it to know what I mean.
One, two three, four and five
Into the pretty lily pond they dived
They splashed, giggled, and laughed aloud
The little but naughty cherubic crowd!
Mummy heard yells, howls and shouts
Peeped out from the kitchen with doubts
Then happy laughter came floating in
Louder and louder grew the din.
She rushed to the garden to see the lot
Amongst the ruckus they had wrought
The ducks were looking at them in distaste
While they gave their mother looks, chaste.
They stepped out from the pond of lilies
The unruly team of colt and fillies
Mother stared at them and tapped a foot
Waiting for witty answers and input!
She swallowed hard when she saw their hair
And told them it just wasn’t at all fair
She asked what they had been doing
What new game were they pursuing!
Their hair was filled with weeds and sand
They said they had tried doing a head-stand
Mother made an angry, impatient sound
To stay calm, very difficult she found.
She marched the filthy looking devils in
She rubbed and scrubbed, hair and skin
The little cherubs were bathed till clean
And dressed in warm robes, a pretty green.
Sipping milk and nibbling cookies for supper
Two children looked down from bunks, upper
They asked for stories from their cosy beds
Of when the angels danced on their heads.
So mother smiled, picked up the story book
Read awhile, paused and took a quick look
To Dreamland the little ones had drifted off
To lands of smiles, wonder and magic, far-off!
